Latest Effective E-book Writing
E-books or Electronic Books are the digital equivalents of conventionally printed books. They are read either on personal computers or on dedicated hardware devices known as e-book devices or e-book readers.
E-book writing is a very profitable enterprise today. Certain tips, if kept in mind, can ensure a large audience for your e-book.
TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE E-BOOK WRITING
- Expertise or Experience – When writing an E-book, it is essential that you have expertise or experience on the subject matter you write on. Adequate research needs to go into collecting and refining material to write your E-book on.
- Interesting and Informative Copy – There are a million e-books out there. How do you differentiate yours? Make your copy interesting and informative. Make the reader WANT to read your e-book and enjoy it, so that he then recommends it to others.
- Appealing Design – Writing an e-book is similar to writing a normal book, in the sense, that design elements need to be carefully considered as well. The cover of your e-book needs to be designed carefully. Make it creative and attractive. It should appeal to the reader – that is what will make him want to read the entire e-book.
- Well-Edited – Before you finally upload your e-book, make sure that it is properly edited. Check for grammatical and spelling errors. If possible, get a professional to go through and edit the entire book, so he can give comments in an unbiased way.
- Effective Marketing – Your e-book may be the best e-book in the world, but that should be for the readers to say. The only way they will be aware of the very presence of your e-book is through effective marketing on your part. Spend enough time and effort on marketing your e-book, as that will guarantee a vast audience.

Hurricane Book Marketing Group
January 29, 2008
Greetings Fellow Authors and Writers; I believe we need a new method to market books, which are either self-published, eBooks or published with major publishers. I believe that in may past entrepreneurial efforts I learned a thing or two about grass roots marketing which can be applied to book marketing as well to literally zoom in on your target market.
Now my plan is not completed yet, however enough is in place that I can briefly describe it to you. Each city in the United States would have authors who were on Blitz Marketing Teams and they would promote their own books and books of relevance from other authors in other regions in the main club.
These authors would all give out coupons and flyers which would direct the readers in reader clubs and such to go to a website. Each flyer would be paid for by local bookstores who would fund the expenses and the flyers themselves. Co-op advertising since one side of the flyer would advertise the bookstore and a readers group and the other side the website listing all the books that each author has written.
The Bonzai and Blitz teams or 4-6 authors in each town would have a mission statement to promote literacy and market books to help the writers. On the website would be links to eBooks and regular books written by the authors in the club or their own websites. This is the basics of the idea so far. Consider all this in 2006.

Getting Your Book Published is Only Half the Battle
January 29, 2008
I once thought I wrote the great American novel. It had all the elements of a success. There was the sympathetic hero that had to face adversity and overcome the bad guys. It was set in rural America and then leapt from coast to coast. It had intrigue, a bit of sci-fi and adventure. It also had a terrific title, “Pursuit of the Phoenix.” All my friends and family loved it, so I went searching for a publisher. After failing to find a “normal” publisher like Doubleday and wasting a few bucks on an agent, I went with PublishAmerica for free. Well, not entirely free. I purchased a few hundred copies for myself and family, but I had a printed book. I was excited to see my name in print.
Let me describe what just happened. I actually self-published using a POD publisher. These kind of businesses print books as they are needed, or “print-on-demand.” They store the information like the cover and text on a computer hard drive and then use a mechanical process to make the books one at a time. This as in contrast to a major publisher that will print 1000’s for distribution to bookstores throughout the country. The disadvantage with PA and other Pod’s is that most bookstores deal directly with wholesalers like Ingrams to get their books. The book chains like Barnes and Noble view POD’s like the plague. That’s unfortunate and not totally fair. But I’ll get back to that. The purpose of this article is to look at marketing. Once you have a book, how do you let people know all about it?
Unless you have someone like Random House pushing it in advertising, you’re on your own. I learned the hard way. My book came out in the early 1990’s before the Internet took off, so I couldn’t spread the word all that easily. Placing ads in the local newspaper can be very expensive. I went to a few book stores but they weren’t interested. Today things are a bit different. For my second book, I went with Booksurge, the publishing division of Amazon.com, the largest bookseller on the net. They placed the book on their site and allowed a link from my site to theirs. They also connect to Barnes and Noble online. This time it was non-fiction; an account of my years as a sales consultant for the Yellow Pages. I did not have to buy any books and they supplied a nice production package for a few hundred dollars. However, I still had to do my own marketing.
But now I had a few options, as do you. I contacted other Yellow Page sites on the web seeing if they would link to my book on Amazon and some did. I then began to write articles about tips regarding the Yellow Pages with links to the book. I go on forums and blogs doing the same thing. Using that method, I’ve had more sales in a few months than 10 years with my other fiction book. Now I understand that a novel is much harder to sell and accept that eventuality. But the Internet opens up a plethora of opportunities unknown a few years ago. Because I’m letting Amazon sell the copies directly to the public, I don’t care that they too are a POD. That’s right, Booksurge is a print-on-demand publisher that only prints them as requested. There are no miles of bookshelves in the Amazon where-house.
But do I really care? I bypass the bookstore which adds a hefty markup and so I am able to price the book lower and still make a few bucks per order. They do all the work as far as taking the credit card, shipping and the paperwork. I just get a royalty check every month. And another thought here. One big advantage to the POD process is that I can update my book’s text for a small fee and keep it current because it doesn’t sit on the shelf. The printing quality is always excellent and I can also change the cover as well, if desired. My final advice is to issue a press release to all the media when it’s published. I got calls from as far away as Australia and London when I sent out my PR’s. Good luck and good selling.

How and Why to Start a Business Book Club
January 29, 2008
Book clubs have been quite a rage over the last few years. Fueled in part by Oprah and others, the concept of reading a book then gathering with others who have read the same book has become “cool” again.
The reasons people have found them valuable include:
- a great way to have meaningful conversation.
- a way to support your own reading habit (I need to have the book read before the meeting!).
- a way to form a community – to have a great reason to gather with other people to bond.
- A way to learn something in a fun way.
It is for all of those same reasons and more that I suggest and encourage business book clubs. Maybe you would like to start one within your organization or maybe you would prefer to build one among colleagues from outside of work. Either way this article will outline the keys to help you build a successful single event or long-term club.
1. Market the idea. Once you are excited about this concept, use your influence and knowledge of your target group to market the concept to them. Even if your goal is to build a long-term “club.” Don’t market it that way – that requires too big of a commitment for many people. You are trying to encourage people to try something new that will requires their time both to read and participate. Rather than inviting them to make a long-term commitment, encourage them to read one book, then once they see the fun and the value, you will have them hooked.
2. Gain commitment. Once you have sold people on the idea make sure you gain a commitment to participate. People are really committing to two things: reading the book, and coming to the “meeting.” After all, if no one comes to the meeting, (or comes without having read much of the book) you won’t have much of a conversation!
3. Start small. Identify the number of people you will feel good about having involved. Experience shows that if you have 4-5 highly committed people you will have a successful experience. More is fine too, but you don’t have to have everyone in the organization or every person at a certain level participating for it to be successful.
4. Start easy. Not everyone is an avid reader. So pick a book that will be an easy sell in terms of topic and length. Picking the new 450-page book you are interested in might not be the best place to start. Remember that the value of the book club experience is more than just the book you read, but the conversations and ideas they stimulate.
5. Make it fun. This is a part of your marketing effort. Have food. Decorate the room, reminder invitations, etc. in a theme suggested by the book. Make the event itself something that will both encourage people to attend and create a buzz so other people want to attend the next one.
6. Have a facilitator. Someone needs to be responsible for facilitating the conversation. Beyond the normal facilitator roles of keeping others participating that person needs to have a few questions prepared that are designed to stimulate conversation.
7. Facilitate lightly. The facilitator should facilitate but not lead. Remember that you are after input, participation and having people involved in the conversation. Don’t let it become a lecture.
8. Keep the group involved. Beyond the group’s involvement in the conversation itself, get everyone’s input into future meeting times, setups, facilitators, and perhaps most of all, books. When people feel involved, they will be more invested in the success of the next event, and beyond.
I have helped organizations think through how to start these groups and have facilitated these discussions. While we have talked about the benefits that can be gained by individuals who participate in these groups, the organizational benefits can be huge as well. For the investment in a book for each person, organizations can create powerful conversation, deep professional development and better relationships.

Stone Cold by David Baldacci Book Review
January 29, 2008
Has Oliver Stone met his match in Harry Finn? You will have to read “Stone Cold” to find the answer.
The Camel Club members, along with its leader Oliver Stone, are respected and feared in Washington, D.C. This club’s purpose is to keep a watchful eye on what is going on and as a result they have gained both friends and enemies. There isn’t anything the leaders would do to prevent The Camel Club from discovering things they do not want made public.
Stone and the other members of The Camel Club are now trying to protect Annabelle Conroy. Annabelle did something unthinkable to casino big wheel Jerry Bagger, who murdered her mother. Jerry is now out for revenge.
Harry Finn then enters the picture. Harry is just like any other normal family man but he really lives two lives. He has many skills and helps to keep us safe. Finn was hired for a job to prove that there were several flaws in the security system and was able to slip into an airport and place a bomb on a plane without anyone getting suspicious. The Department of Homeland Security got authorization for this job and hired Finn to carry it through. Finn’s other job is that of an unstoppable killer and he is now out to get Oliver Stone. Men from Stone’s past are turning up dead.
Now the big questions are who will win and will they both survive?
It is not a must to read these two prior books by David Baldacci - The Camel Club and the Collectors - but I think it would help you follow along with the story. The author has created some very interesting characters for this novel and the reader will learn to like them even though they might be someone you should have doubts about. The character I liked the best is Harry Finn because he reminds you of James Bond all over again. It is a difficult feat to top the other two books in this series but David Baldacci has accomplished this and more. Stone Cold is the best in the Camel Club series yet. This book has it all - spies, suspense, action, twists and turns. Be sure to add “Stone Cold” to your reading list.

Your Book Marketing Plan - Winning Strategies and Tips
January 29, 2008
Many authors hit a roadblock when it comes to putting together and implementing a book marketing plan. You know you need to have one, you have a vague idea of what it needs to include, but pulling it all together into a step-by-step plan of attack is not nearly as easy as it sounds.
A good starting point is to break your plan up into major categories. From there, you can further define and set up strategies for each area of your book marketing plan.
The first thing that comes to mind for most authors and self publishers is book store sales. Makes sense doesn’t it? That’s where people buy books don’t they? It’s true that making your book available to the general public through bookstores is a very vital component of your marketing plan.
However, it is just that — one single component of your plan. There are many elements that will make up your book marketing plan and arranging to have your book available in bookstores is just one of them. Let’s call that component #1:
Book Marketing Plan Component #1
Making Books Available in Bookstores
Now, it’s one thing to secure placement for your book on the bookstore shelves, but now how are people going to know it’s there? Customers can’t (and won’t) buy something they’ve never heard of. This is where the publicity component of your Book Marketing Plan comes into play. Setting up and ongoing publicity campaign is the number one way to drive customers to the bookstore to buy your book. We’ll call this component #2:
Book Marketing Plan Component #2
Setting up and Implementing a Successful Publicity Campaign
Besides book stores, you can also sell your books to nontraditional book buyers like display retailers, book clubs, catalogs, gift retailers, volume buyers (think Costco and Price Club), corporations, foundations and foreign markets. We sell thousands of self published books to buyers like these all the time and targeting these buyers should make up a good portion of your book marketing plan. This will be component #3:
Book Marketing Plan Component #3
Non-traditional Markets
In this day and age, you would be making a big mistake if you didn’t include the internet as a vital component of your Book Marketing Plan. The internet is the best way to directly reach your target customers. It is also the best way to sell to them since you cut out any third parties and retain 100% of the profits. There are many ways to research the internet to ensure that there is a demand for your book and the best ways to fill that demand.
Book Marketing Plan Component #4
The Internet - Your Book Website
These are the four most important components of your Book Marketing Plan. Now you must research each component individually to customize the approach you take for your book.
