A Fine Balance (Oprah’s Book Club)
June 18, 2008
A Fine Balance displays a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens. This magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers — a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village — will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.
Customer Review: Very good
This was a very good book. It took me a little bit of time to get into the book, as the characters names were a little hard to follow. But once the story got started this book was really good. It was a bit depressing though.
Customer Review: Absolute favorite I’ve ever read—–
I’m visiting Amazon to purchase this book for a group of girlfriends. I read this book years ago and still can’t get it out of my mind. I’m still haunted by the characters and yes, as dramatic as this sounds, I feel like I’ve grown a little as a person since reading this book. You can’t help but connect to these characters and feel their hardships. As another reviewer commented you can see, feel, taste and smell India on each page. It is a long book, but please don’t be put off by the size. You will devour each and every page with renewed vigor! Enjoy!! Buy from here…
The Serial Killers Club
June 16, 2008
When our hero finds himself in the path of a serial killer, he somehow manages to defend himself, and give the blood-thirsty madman a taste of his own medicine. But when he goes through the dead man’s wallet, he finds a mysterious personal ad inviting him to join a party hosted by Errol Flynn. What begins with passing curiosity soon becomes uncontrollable obsession, as our hero becomes acquainted with 18 killers. Their game: to share the thrill of the hunt and to make sure no two members choose the same two victims. To protect their identities, they have all chosen names of old Hollywood stars, and before long, our hero becomes Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. But he has no intention of following the rules. With a government special agent on his trail who will soon become his partner in crim, “Dougie” plans to knock off the killers one by one, from Carole Lombard to Chuck Norris, to Laurence Olivier and Cher. But what happens when the “stars” notice their numbers dropping?
Customer Review: H - O - R - R - I - B - L - E !!
I’m not sure I’ve ever read such drivel in my life. Or maybe it’s because in the past I would have thrown the book out long before the end. But I stuck it out because I wanted to share this review and I won’t review a book unless I read the entire thing.
I picked this book up because it’s up my alley and it sounded like an interesting premise. I also thought that - in the right hands - it could be one awesome book. Well, it most certainly wasn’t in the right hands.
“Felixpath’s” review covers most of my own disappointments with the book, so I’m not going to waste my time going into the details of how this book is such a piece of garbage. Where I don’t agree with fellow reviewer Felixpath is where he suggests that Povey is a competent writer. Where other reviewers here suggest the book was an “easy” read, well, that’s because the writing is at such a basic level. There’s nothing intriguing or even polished about Povey’s writing. It’s serviceable at best, and sometimes that’s okay if you actually have a decent plot or interesting characters.
But this book has nothing. It’s seriously the worst joke I’ve read in years, and only serves to confirm for me that the publishing industry is becoming seriously screwed up.
Customer Review: different humor…
A Serial Killers club? Yes, it does exist. This is a short book with a different type of amusement for all you dark comedians out there. I can’t believe they killed Chuck Norris! Buy from here…
Blue Lines
June 16, 2008
Import only vinyl pressing of their 1991 debut album available at a great price.
Customer Review: Highly recommended
If you are looking for a great cd to listen to than look no further than Massive Attack’s “Blue Lines”. My personal favorites on the album have to be Daydreaming and One Love. This CD is a must have for any true fan.
Customer Review: Whoa!
Trip-Hop is basically hip-hop with a bit more substance than your average gangster record (those actually do have substance as well), and way more musical merit than any _________ rap artist out there today. Being released in 1991 makes it even cooler, but aside from the ahead of it’s time bull_______ (influence had no impact on me whatsoever when deciding to get this), it’s an awesome record on it’s own. THe music is just so sublime. Trippy beats, deep basslines, samples of pianos, strings, effects, paired with dark urban raps, with soulful vocals that soar through the air. Can’t argue with that.
The songs on here have the urban vibe that I alwayas mention, but it is very _________ difficult to explain in words. No worries, the music is great anywhere, Blue Line really comes out in the downtown rain. IT’s also great music that serves as great chilling music. Don’t even treat this as backround music, this may be one of the most enganging albums to actually LISTEN to I have come across this year. I’ve listened to quite the many perfect classic albums this year.
This album is always changing, always keeping your interest. From Safe From Harm, Five Man Army, the masterful Unfinished Symphony, and the coolest of them all, Daydreaming, every song on here rocks. Definitly a perfect album. Not a minute wasted. I prefer it over Entroducing… by DJ Shadow. That album also is another great album from beggining to end. Electronic music really does have soul. Way more emotion than Nirvana ever will have.

Customer Review: Useless and a waste of money
I bought this in hopes of improving my singing voice, especially increasing the range of my voice and avoid singing off tune. At the end of using this my voice is no better than it was at the start - in fact it’s a bit worse. I’m having a harder time keeping my voice in tune than I did at the start. It actually made my singing worse! Buy from here…
Thalia - Greatest Hits
June 16, 2008
Customer Review: First Introduction to Thalia
What amazes me about Thalia is the diversity of styles in her music. One might say that she’s selling out and looking for the latest craze in latin or US music each time. However, she can pull it off and that shows ability. Her voice is strong enough to carry her from ballads like “No Me Enseñaste…” to the incredible “Circa De Ti”. I dont like her experimentation with rap, but admit that I could see how others would. I’ll bet she would be great in reggaeton with Daddy or Don Omar.
Her traditional Mexican songs like “Amor a La Mexicana” and “Piel Morena” can hook you, but my favorite on this album is “Maria de la Barrio”.
She definitely has a lot of talented people around her helping with these productions, pero su talento es en este album. Su voz no es como Laura Pausini, pero su voz es mejor que muchos artistas. Claro, ella es muy linda, pero no es el solo razon ella es una estrella. Pero Paulina Rubio ya es mi novia de mis sueños
If you buy this, you will enjoy it. The production quality and catchy rhythms mean you can stick this in your CD player without having to skip over any songs. This is a good sampling to introduce you to a very popular artist in the latin genre.

Kids: Duets Live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola
June 13, 2008
As good as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano’s recent quartet albums featuring piano master Hank Jones were, they didn’t prepare us for the sublimity of this two-man encounter. Duets Live has it all: brilliant and spirited individual playing, exceptional rapport, a terrific mix of songs and a luminous awareness of jazz in all its varied forms. What makes Lovano and Jones so compatible, even though they are separated by more than three decades, is the ease with which they each straddle and move back and forth across the line beween modern and pre-modern (in this, Lovano recalls Coleman Hawkins, one of the giants Jones backed). Much of the material is steeped in classic bop, but Jones points the way back to an earlier golden era with his lambent sparkle and Lovano comes at songs like “Charlie Chan” (his salute to Charlie Parker), Thelonious Monk’s “Four in One,” and Tadd Damerson’s “Soultrane” from consistently fresh angles even as he applies his classic husky sound. Still a force at 88, Jones elegantly frees three of his late brother Thad’s tunes from their big band trappings and in the solo spotlight pulls out stops on the standard, “Oh! Look at me Now!” It’s a performance of gusty expression and poetic delicacy, slyness and warmth, and endless smiles. Is it too much to ask for a volume two? –Lloyd Sachs
Customer Review: its great that mr jones is still with us.
mr jones playing is great as always.mr lovanos playing is the most distinctive of all the current sax players. the playing on this album is very good, the monk tune “four in one” is my favorate. the only thing i not not like is that the piano could have been recored with a little more volume.
Customer Review: A MAGNIFICENT DUO: HANK & JOE IN A TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL JAZZ PERFORMANCE
Five MAGNIFICENT Stars!! The legendary jazz keyboard master Hank Jones and legendary tenor saxophone titan, Joe Lovano, have conjured up one of the best jazz duet performances in years!! And they are caught live at the intimate Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in the Frederick P. Rose Hall, which is the Jazz At Lincoln Center performance complex in NYC. These are timeless, beautiful, flawless performances by two jazz masters who have almost restlessly searched the jazz spectrum for fulfillment in many formats over the years. They definitely have found something very special here that just may require an encore and it happened in a great venue. Stepping away from Mr Lovano’s quartet, these two incomparable musicians have all of the propulsion and rhythm that is needed to propel these excellent performances along nicely. Unencumbered by bass and drum, they bend and stretch the time at will, with Hank providing solos and colorations as well as wicked time-keeping ’stride piano’ with Joe declaratively soaring above and in between, making for some wonderful mellow jazz music. ‘80ish’ Mr Jones plays with equal fire as ‘50ish’ Mr Lovano making this duo an empathetic match made in jazz heaven.
The ‘Pieces De Resistance’, the best of the best, are wall to wall equally-captivating performances which proceed without letdown from song to song. But I especially like the fire by both players on “Lady Luck”, written by Hank’s brother, Thad, and “Kids Are Pretty People”. I also love Joe’s nod to older tenor players with his ‘Ben Webster-ish’ tenor sax effects on “Lullaby” and his nod to Yardbird Parker on “Charlie Chan”, so reminiscent of Miles’ “Half Nelson”. Hank gets two solo bites of this CD apple with a wonderful, shimmering “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’ ” and “Oh! Look At Me Now”, which is fitting since “Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola” is known for great solo piano performances. Joe gets off what is probably his best solo, alone and later with Hank, on a swirling performance of Monks’ “Four In One”, blowing hot, liquid strings of notes. Pure, timeless, magnificent jazz music! Encore, gentlemen! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!

Post
June 13, 2008
This Icelandic marvel is such an original that, even after four Sugarcubes albums and a brilliant solo Debut, she remains an acquired taste. “Army of Me” is a turbulent, darkling tune that’s almost conventional next to the gloriously eclectic material that follows. Working with Tricky, Soul II Soul/U2 producer Nellee Hooper, and string arranger/one-hit wonder Deodato, Björk looses her helium-fueled voice and surreal wordplay on Gershwinesque pop (the adorable “It’s Oh So Quiet”), ambient dub (”Possibly Maybe”) and all kinds of fresh dance/pop hybrids (”Enjoy,” “Hyper-Ballad,” “I Miss You”). Too raw and adventurous for mass success, perhaps, but a more unique, engaging, oddly accessible artist just doesn’t exist. –Jeff Bateman
Customer Review: I wonder what my body would sound like
This is my favorite Bjork CD. For me it typefies her fearlessness in pressing forward on the frontier of sound and unusual rhythms. She’s also not afraid to tackle an epic story in the framework of a song and actually make it work. Songs from this CD remain pretty high in my play lists.
Customer Review: Brilliant
The music on “Post” is brilliant and profoundly original. Like many Bjprk albums, it stands up to repeated listenings over many years and each time it reveals something more of itself. I have a deep respect for this artists and I think this in one of her best works. Buy from here…
