The Friars Club Encyclopaedia of Jokes: 2,000 One-Liners, Straight Lines, Stories, Gags, Roasts, Ribs and Put-Downs

May 20, 2008

Introduction by Alan King. The most extensive collection of jokes ever compiled from Friars Club members and other comedians, this hilarious book covers every imaginable subject–from aging to dieting, fashion to fathers, birth control to male anatomy.
Customer Review: The Friars Club Enclyopedia of Jokes is Great!!!
If you only have one book to buy, this is the book of jokes that every comic should have next to the comedy Bible. Absolutely first rate…and printed in a format that was easy to read and in categories that were easy to follow. Chuckles on every page.
Customer Review: 1,998 failed jokes
This profoundly unfunny joke book was given to me as a gift, and ended up on the back of my toilet. Eventually, I wound up reading the book cover to cover, and I don’t believe I laughed or snickered more than two or three times over the course of the entire book.

These jokes are just not funny. Some are “dirty” (which does not offend me), many are racist (which does), and almost all are boring and obvious.

Warning: If you rated this book five stars, you are probably one of those people who thinks they are much funnier than they atcually are. Buy from here…

Customer Review: SIMILAR TO OOP BEST OF MUSIKLADEN VOLUME 4
THIS IS IDENTICAL TO THE OOP BEST OF MUSIKLADEN VOLUME 4 SAVE FOR ONE VIDEO, THAT OF HUMBLE PIE’S NATURAL BORN WOMAN. THIS IS A MUCH BETTER VALUE COMPARED TO THE $25+ AMAZON SELLERS WANT FOR THAT ONE.
Customer Review: Great Companion to Vol. 1…
Vol. 2 is a wonderful collection of early 70’s rock. This West German television show originally aired from September 1965 through December 1972. In my Vol.1 review, I had pointed out that the “Psychedelic” effects/images that were added to the background of most of the performances were my biggest issue. Fortunately that is not the case on Vol. 2. First off a few observations:

* Biggest disappointment: No “Badfinger” performance (one of my favorite bands)!!?? The track (#5) is not only missing but is completely skipped on the selection menu (shows track 4 then 6 right after).
* The “Run Time” on this disc is 40 minutes (not 42). Assuming this is due to the missing Badfinger track.
* Audio quality on all I would rate 3.5 stars (not bad for 30+ year old TV performances).
* Video quality on all I would rate 4.0 stars. Most tracks tend to be slightly on the dark side but images are still sharp and clear.
* No Bonus features

The following is a brief critique of each track:

* Jethro Tull - Short but well performed by Ian and group.
* Alice Cooper - Alice’s original line-up performing a great version of I’m eighteen right after release. There are some bright psychedelic images in the background but do not take away from the performance. As good if not better than the studio version.
* Kiki Dee - Has the atmosphere of a true “club” scene with audience members standing around the stage area rather than sitting. A very good performance. Her band members are each given equal time on camera.
* Johnny Rivers - Johnny & band doing his 1972 Classic. This was a great comeback song for the 60’s hit maker. He sports his 70’s curly natural doo rather than his slicked black “Secret Agent Man” styled hair.
* The Hollies - An early Beat Club performance (circa 1966). This is one of only two black & white tracks on the disc. Graham Nash was still in the band at this time (shown the least of any band member on camera). The performance is reminiscent of an “American Bandstand” performance with the audience dancing in front.
* BTO - Has the look of the old NBC Burt Sugarman American showcase “The Midnight Special” (1972-1981). Very odd spotlight lighting on this one but still entertaining.
* Doobie Brothers - Very cool performance. Tom Johnston is in top form.
* Ten Years After - The other track in black & white. Alvin Lee & company (including go-go dancers) doing one of their classics (approx. 5:30 minutes long).
* Canned Heat - Rare studio performance by this great blues/boogie band. Laid back but good performance.
* Three Dog Night - This actually a “One Dog Night” line-up. It’s a good rendition of this song by a bearded Cory Wells but Chuck Negron (normally the lead on this song) and Danny Hutton were not present for this performance. The rest of the original band members are here.

Although the DVD is short in total length, this is still a great buy ($8.99 at time of review).

Paul Van Dyk - Global (DVD-CD Combo)

May 20, 2008

A combination CD-DVD set, Global acts as a handy greatest-hits collection of Paul Van Dyk’s wildly popular brand of shiny trance, featuring two previously unreleased tracks along with a mix of his best-known work. While he’s justifiably famous as a DJ, it’s really Van Dyk’s production, filled with shimmering electronics and relentlessly upbeat rhythms, that sets his recorded work apart from the pack. His knack for catchy hooks turns songs like “Another Way” from 2000’s Out There and Back into swirling epics designed for jolting the dance floor into glowstick overdrive. Of the record’s two previously unreleased tracks, “Animacion” sounds more like Van Dyk’s recent work. The other, “My World,” with its speedy, early-trance-house feel, may have sat in the back of Van Dyk’s record crate for years. The DVD includes live footage, interview snippets, fan testimonials, and a 5.1 surround-sound mix. –Matthew Cooke
Customer Review: Great introduction to trance for the newbie…
Gosh, I’ve played this CD to folks who have never heard trance much less ever heard of PVD and they’ve loved it. One example was my old school boss who heard it when I gave him a lift one day. He found it upbeat, cheerful and relaxing all at the same time. He asked me the cd info and got his own copy. He later shared that he had played it for his wife who was equally pleased. Even if you’re familiar with PVD and this type of music I think you’ll find that you won’t get tired of hearing this cd and watching the enclosed DVD over and over. Its a solid example of trance music and PVD’s work.
Customer Review: Global DVD
This DVD will no matter what be loved by PVD fans, it is is comprised of some of his lighter trance. I enjoyed the music a lot. However I honestly couldnt make it through 10 minutes of watching it becuase it is just clips from his parties across the world. I ended up cranking it up and just cleaning my house. Overall a good dvd to listen to for studying or background, but hard to watch it. I still reccomend it. I am a huge PVD fan. Buy from here…

A Shot at Glory

May 17, 2008

Customer Review: Football and Scotland
If I am not mistaken, this could be the only movie about football in Scotland not to be about hooligans or riots. Even with Duvalls spurious accent, this movie is good.
Customer Review: Should have gone the Disney Sports movie formula
First off; I give this 4 stars, 4 stars in your sports film genre; 4 stars since there are not many soccer/footy movies out there and it is deserved and despite it’s blemishes still has redeeming qualities to it; but if I were rating it in terms of movies in general; sure, it would probably merit 3 stars.

It is absurd I agree, the premise of the film that a team may move out of town as has happened in the USA with various sports teams, let alone move to Ireland;

But I think this movie could have been improved; the team needed motivations to win, one was to stay in their little Scottish town of Kilnockie; maybe it would have been more believable if the American owner Keaton had threatened Duvall’s coaching character with being fired if the club did not have more success.

A bit more could have been made of the Celtic/Rangers rivalry; also, though it doesn’t have to be wholely a film for the family, quite a few of the “f” words and other scenes could have easily been omitted and I believe it would have been better; if the DVD box claims it to be like a “Hoosiers with rowdier fans” then why not go into that direction even more? Maybe even take a page out of the Disney sports movie formula with such worthwhile watching movies as Invincible or Cool Runnings.

Good shots of football being played in the land where it was been among the top sports for a hundred years; still a decent cultural flavor of Scotland and their league can be found in this movie.

Lastly, I assume that the [sub] mark, may signify subtitles; listed on one of the DVDs; and I think, many could use this for parts of this movie; I love a good Scottish accent but I want to understand what is going on too! Buy from here…

Raja

May 17, 2008

Venice Film Festival winner RAJA is the March selection in The Film Movement Series. Raja is a nineteen year old orphan literally and figuratively scarred by life. Fred is an emotionally bankrupt westernet living amid his plush gardens and palm trees. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Marrakech, RAJA is a cross-cultural drama about a wealthy middle-aged Frenchman’s complex relationship with a local youth. Fred’s attempt at seduction, and their mutual attempt at manipulation, are fractured by their gross disparity of income and cultural sophistication. The New York Times wrote “What distinguishes Raja from every other movie to contemplate the treacherous intersection of passion, avarice and power is its unsettling emotional honesty. The two central performances (especially Ms. Benssallem’s Raja, who has the intensity of a cornered wild animal) are so spontaneous and mercurial that the reckless flirtation seems to be unfolding before your eyes.” Each month subscribers to Film Movement receive an award-winning film such as RAJA to own on DVD each month. The First Wives Club

May 17, 2008

Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton prove that revenge is a dish best served cold. Former college buddies, they reunite at the funeral of a dear friend who took a swan dive onto Fifth Avenue. All three discover they share the same unhappy history of husbands who dove into middle-age by dumping them for trophy wives. Forming a warring triumvirate, they decide to get even, and along the way remind themselves of long-forgotten capabilities. The action gets a little too “wacky” at times, but the gals are great. Portraying an aging actress, Hawn is sometimes a little too flamboyant, but there is much fun to be had in her flashiness, especially when she pokes fun at Tinseltown and her persona. Instead of her usual brashness, Midler stretches herself and shows us a woman who is not just unhappy, but also deeply sorrowful. Not that she isn’t quick with a wisecrack, but her expressive face alone tells the story of her marriage. As the repressed and guilt-ridden spouse of a self- involved ad executive, Keaton finds her anger, and her voice, when her psychiatrist (Marcia Gay Harden) oversteps ethical boundaries. Watching Keaton grow from an ineffectual homemaker into a powerful businessperson reminds us that it has been far too long since she has done a comedy. Director Hugh Wilson smartly chose supporting players who each brought something unique to the film. However, he does not maintain the first hour’s effervescent humor throughout the film, as the ending is weakened by a softening of the wives’ resolve. –Rochelle O’Gorman
Customer Review: Why Elizabeth Berkley?!
Can someone PLEASE tell me why Elizabeth Berkely has top bill in this movie? With Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn on the bill, why does she even get honorable mention? This is a great movie, full of fun and full of tears. When three former schoolmates (and ex-wives) all find themselves being jerked around by their philandering husbands, they decide to take matters into their own hands and get a little ‘first wives’ justice. The result is a hilarious comedy where 3 former husbands find out just what slime balls they really are, and first wives don’t simply go away when they get a bit old and baggy. Goldie is the best choice for the aging actress, Diane plays the mousy one who can’t make a decision, and Bette is the connsumate Jewish housewife who finds herself replaced by a 20 year old bimbo who lives well, while she and her son struggle to make the rent. Maggie Smith lends her considerable talent to this movie, and the result is a hilarious comedy that evey jilted wife whishes she’d thought of. In the end, revenge isn’t the sweetest thing, but friendship and outreach to other hurt women is. The music is great and fits each scene, A fun show for all.
Customer Review: Awesome Chick Flick!
I took this movie on a “girl’s trip” with two buddies and had a couple of parts selected that fit “us”. It was a riot to watch the whole thing as well. Buy from here…
