Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector’s Edition)

March 20, 2008

All films take a certain suspension of disbelief. Fight Club takes perhaps more than others, but if you’re willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups and 12-step meetings. True, he isn’t actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), also faking her way through groups. Spiraling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), whose forthright style and no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler and the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, and then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, and things fly out of control, as Fight Club grows into a nationwide fascist group that escapes the protagonist’s control.

Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Seven), is not for the faint of heart; the violence is no holds barred. But the film is captivating and beautifully shot, with some thought-provoking ideas. Pitt and Norton are an unbeatable duo, and the film has some surprisingly humorous moments. The film leaves you with a sense of profound discomfort and a desire to see it again, if for no other reason than to just to take it all in. –Jenny Brown
Customer Review: You have to see this movie.
It kind of scary in a “this is too familiar” way but it also has humor. Brad Pitt isn’t a pretty boy in this one. His character is kind of cool but a little retarded and whacked out psychologically. Which I liked.
I love the story line except the ending but that did not mess up the rest of the movie, at all. It made sense though. The whole movie. As strange as it was-it reaches you on a deeper level without being deep or wishywashy/sappy. I’d say it’s a dvd you’d want in your collection. I’ve seen it 3 times but now I’d like to have it on hand to watch again and again. Yeah, it’s that kind of a movie.
ENJOY!!!!!
Customer Review: Fight Club
This is one of my top favorite movies. I have a lot of respect for Chuck Palahniuk’s work, and this movie is VERY well adapted from the novel. It’s gritty, sexy, and thought-provoking. Cover your eyes in some parts if you’re not up for gun shot wounds and graphic fights.

Vegas

March 20, 2008

When Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland started distributing homemade singles around Los Angeles at the beginning of the ’90s, their bass-fortified, hard-rolling techno concoctions perked up the ears of industry impresarios and local scenesters alike. Vegas, their affectionately-titled major label debut, refines the formula. Thick with layers of pounding beats and rock dynamics, it takes the typical club fare and beefs it up with a uniquely western slant. The detectable influences range from the power chords of AC/DC to old school hip-hop patterns to the smooth melodies of Stevie Wonder. On blistering tracks like “Trip Like I Do” and “Keep Hope Alive,” the Crystal Method confirm that America has become a force of contention in the electronica field. –Aidin Vaziri
Customer Review: Doesn’t get old
Enough has been said by others. It’s merely worth mentioning that I have had this album for years and every time I pull it out again, it’s fresh and awesome, engaging and energetic. Great stuff.

Volta

March 20, 2008

Bjork returns to her iconic, innovative and rhythmic roots with Volta. Featuring her own infamous beats and collaborations with Timbaland, Antony Hegarty, Brian Chippendale and an all-female Icelandic brass section, the end result is an explosion of beats and an amalgamtion of sound and visuals that give Volta a life of its own, like the world hasn’t seen from Bjork in years.
Customer Review: Bjork is bringing HORNy back!
It amuses me how one album can be considered both an artist’s return to form and another chapter of her “unstoppable descent” into Eurotrash experiment (blimey Mr. K. Davis, that was so unfair!). So, is Bjork’s Volta her most commercial and accessible collection of songs since Post or just another experimental effort in musical oddness, along with the most recent Medulla and DR9 soundtrack? Die-hard fans, critics and general audience will always have mixed opinions about Bjork simply because her music and visuals go way beyond the boundaries of Pop and Avant-garde, and this seems to be the only point where listeners and reviewers are in unison.

Have you been sweating over the past decade trying to understand her music, her sense of style, her wardrobe? Tsk, tsk! She even warned you on her debut single back in 1993, “be ready to get confused, there’s definitely no logic to human behaviour”. But yet, her music is “so irresistible”. And Volta is definitely, definitely, definitely no exception.

Mainstream producer Timbaland is aboard on this record, so were you expecting to find Bjork sounding like Britney or Justin? Oooops! Or would you prefer to see Bjork back in Homogenic/Vespertine mode with strings and orchestra? Oooops… again!

Instead, Bjork is bringing the “horns” back and believe me, you won’t miss the luscious strings (certainly not as much as you did in Medulla). The mood created by the brass section is utterly beautiful and suits very well songs like Wanderlust and Pneumonia. Live on stage, the Wonderbrass girls will rock you with their “flag and a trumpet” on Declare Independence (If you don’t have a chance to see the tour, watch out for the Volta Live Session album that apparently has already been recorded and will be released eventually). Finally, the bold brass has proved to be another great match to Bjork’s unique voice.

“The beast is back…” and we humans should be all very glad.

Customer Review: A VERY strong return to form
If you’ve been a little befuddled by Bjork’s work in recent years, fear not: this one, while not a step back as far as her first couple of records, is her most accessible work in a long time, especially for fans of her “weird lite” style, and not so much her “smash glass typerwriters” take on music.

It’s a tight record, with compelling, driven songs, and if you’re a fan of her singing this record showcases her in fine form.

If you’ve been hiding form her, pick it up. She’s not forgotten you. Buy from here…

Judas at the Jockey Club and Other Episodes of Porfirian Mexico (Second Edition)

March 17, 2008

This brilliant and eminently readable cultural history looks at Mexican life during the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz, from 1876 to 1911. At that time Mexico underwent modernization, which produced a fierce struggle between the traditional and the new and exacerbating class antagonisms. In these pages, the noted historian William H. Beezley illuminates many facets of everyday Mexican life lying at the heart of this conflict and change, including sports, storytelling, healthcare, technology, and the traditional Easter-time Judas burnings that became a primary focus of the strife during those years. This second edition features a new preface by the author as well as updated and expanded text, notes, and bibliography.

Customer Review: Great review of Mexican life
Profilo Diaz was the dictator in charge before the Mexican Revolution and the structure of society was clearly coming apart at the seams when he was in power. Beezley does an excellent job of showing how the society was coming apart through various aspects of the culture including religious festivals and life at the Jockey Club. The book is very well written but if you do not know what is happening in Mexico during the Profirian period than this will be a hard book to follow. For those who know a lot about Mexico this is a must read.
Customer Review: How could they let this book go out of print?
This is one of the books I recommend most frequently when people ask for fun stuff to read, in English, about Mexico. And I frequently assign it to students in intro-level history classes. I’m not entirely convinced by the chapter on rural life, but the book as a whole belongs among the best histories of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century period in Latin America. Dang! Now what will I assign my students? Bring this back into print, please! Buy from here…

# 1’s

March 17, 2008

Mariah Carey’s #1’s is as much a time capsule of ’90s pop and R&B as a record of one woman’s chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly ’50s-style “Vision of Love” to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs (”Honey”), Jermaine Dupri (”Sweetheart”), and O.D.B. (”Fantasy”). Some hit, some miss, but all feature the fluttery swoops that Carey substitutes for expression of feeling. Depth is beside the point, but few of these tracks are even fun. Still, after eight years, there seems to be no stopping her, and this album will hardly break her streak of successes. –Rickey Wright
Customer Review: This CD is wonderful yet I don’t understand why they released it AND a greatest hits with 95% of the same material. ???
These songs are golden, especially My All, Sweetheart, Whenever You Call, Honey, I Still Believe, Always Be My Baby, One Sweet Day, Hero, Fantasy, Vision of Love (2nd best), Dreamlover (favorite song ever), I’ll Be There (3rd best song here) and Emotions.

Mariah is in a category of Her own and I wish her new album will be worth a 4/5 star rating (at least) =^).

Good Luck, Boo.

Cover Art: A+ (Classifies a true Diva, unafraid of other’s nasty opinions and rumors)

Customer Review: Mariah Medley
This is a good Mariah compilation. Solid mix of dance and R & B music, with pop attibutes at times and a little rap thrown in other times. Showcase of Mariah’s stuff up to that time. Notable songs:

Sweetheart - good bounce to it, an airy tune

Honey - fun and lively, good groove

Fantasy - fun tune from mid-90s that makes the listener want to dance around. Good beat. Showcases Mariah’s soprano

Dreamlover

Emotions - very good showcase of Mariah’s vocal range and the power of her voice. Funky piano in there.

Someday - Mariah’s first “big one” from 1990 I think. Great tune, infectious pop with a hard edge. Mariah’s powerful voice with its big range was already on display in her early 20s. Buy from here…
