I know this was a compilation for a charity, but it was too varied for me. My suggestion would be to do one in a mild version and one in the hip-hop, wilder version. I could not show this at my Christmas party because of the wilder nature of some of the video!! After all, it is Christmas, not Spring Break!! Buy from here…

These no-talents need to GIVE IT UP. Really, now. How skanky can one be to sell a few extra records? Bad choreography and only one of the girls really sings. And she’s not great at it!

Customer Review: PCD Live
I was totally dissappointed with this DVD. If that was really their live show in London I feel very sorry for their fans. It was like they were just singing in my living room. The stage was a joke. It was sooo small.
There was no stage show at all, no pizzaz, nothing.
Again it was a big dissappointment. Buy from here…

Big Calm

March 26, 2008

Blame Tricky and Portishead. They started this whole Bristol sound thing, with sleepy techno beats overshadowed by the chirrupy vocals of some slumberland chanteuse. And–just when you think the approach has lost all its steam, all its relevance–along comes a new outfit to make the music a few degrees sleepier, the singing a tad more dreamy. And singers don’t come any dreamier than Skye Edwards, whose lissome trill infuses every track on this sophomore outing with a tranquil ennui. You don’t jump around to Morcheeba numbers like “The Sea.” You sit back and let them creep up on you, as steady as the tides. –Tom Lanham
Customer Review: Exemplary trip-hop classic
This disc works as a party trip-hop disc; as cruising music; as cool pop music for a date, and on plenty of other levels. It’s extremely accessible and consistent, more so than anything else Morcheeba produced. Great grooves, very listenable, good for cleaning the house, partying, driving, whatever.

But: I have to make a note of this. Sky the vocalist(I DO love her, I’m so sad she’s gone from Morcheeba now) does start to get a little heavy on the loud breaths during song phrases (”seagulls scavenge… hooaaaggghh… steal ice cream… waarrrggghh… worries vanish within my dream… waaagghhhh… left my soul there, down by the sea-ee… hoaghhhh… lost control yeah… haaaggghhh…). It gets a little bit distracting. Now that I’ve helpfully pointed this out, I’m sure you’ll immediately download the MP3s to check it out. It’s definitely there. It’s not present on their earlier work, such as Who Can You Trust. Shame really. The only thing that mars this otherwise fine disc.
Customer Review: Nothing but short of extraordinary
I’ve been listening to massive attack and portishead along with Big Calm by morcheeba and i am truthfully disappointed by how much this album didnt live up to what it was said to be. Portishead’s Dummy album was way better as a kind of chill and lounge music compared to Big Calm. Only buy this album if your a true Morcheeba fan and if you wont mind a little boring music. Playtime - Children’s Book of the Month Club

March 23, 2008

Play, sing and dance along with this magical, musical film. Paul and Sandra Fierlinger(creators of Oxygen’s “Drawn from Life, Nickelodeon’s Amby and Dexter, and Sesame Street’s Teeny Little Super Guy)bring favorite children’s songs to life! Performers include Rachel Peer and special guests Leon Redbone and Johnny Cash. Songs include Over in the Meadow, Wheels On the Bus, London Bridge, I’m A Teapot, Six Little Ducks and More!!
Customer Review: Playtime on DVD please
This is the best childrens video we have ever bought………Our VHS tape has worn out and we would hope that it will become available on DVD. DVD PLEASE!
Customer Review: Our favorite children’s video
This was our children’s first video and our all-time favorite. The beautiful, whimsical images and gentle music captivated the entire family again and again. The animation and musical style are very unique. Great for inducing “warm and fuzzy” feelings. The songs, some familiar stand-bys and some new, became a part of our family repertoire. Unfortunately, the video wore out in a short time - that’s why we looked for it here. But $40 for a VHS video? Let’s be real. I hope somebody makes this on DVD. Buy from here…

The Breakfast Club (High School Reunion Collection)

March 23, 2008

John Hughes’s popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students–a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)–sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it’s easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. –Tom Keogh
Customer Review: Zeitgeist-capturing 80s teen fantasy…
…believably dressed up as serious drama about five mismatched school students who not only bond over the course of a Saturday detention, but also find romantic and emotional resolution to their teenage problems.

Customer Review: Message Of Conformity
Don’t let this one fool you.

While this angst-filled detention-as-confessional `80’s Brat Pack flick is hailed as a banner of youthful freedom, the final resolution can’t be viewed as anything but a Big Brother-ish commercial for the joys of conforming to what’s socially acceptable. Think about it. Remember when the it-girl transformed the individualistic outsider into the image of what was in, and suddenly the loner became happy and accepted and wanted by the cool guy? A terrible message for anyone, but especially for kids forming a sense of self awareness.

The Breakfast Club isn’t a very good movie but obviously it somehow strikes a chord with enough people for it to have classic status and be fondly recalled on best-of lists and has been paid tribute to on everything from songs to an episode of Dawson’s Creek. Me, I never saw the attraction here and don’t like The Breakfast Club very much. Skip it for better `80’s teen movie fare.

Nu Med

March 23, 2008

It seems impossible to avoid the fusion and clash of cultures in world music these days. Connectivity means it’s all within your (everyone else’s) reach. Here on their second album, Nu Med, Balkan Beat Box continue to play at the nexus of Eastern European, klezmer, Arabic, hip-hop, rock and electronic music. Headed by Israelis Tamir Muskat (drums, programming) and Ori Kaplan (saxophone), the band’s sound is far from forced, easily summing up the musicians’ lives in their homeland as well as their current experiences living in New York City. As with all great folk songs, the melodies are insistently catchy enough to get listeners to sing or hum along before the song ends. Highlights include the Saharan dancehall cut “Digital Monkey,” the insistent “bbbeat,” and the Dead Sea surf guitar sound of “Joro Boro,” which features singer Dessislava Stefanova. Like the first album, this one is as fun as it is far reaching. –Tad Hendrickson
Customer Review: Great stuff!!!
These guys are a lively mix of Middle Eastern, Klezmer, and hip hop styles. This is very fun stuff, very different. I’m turning people on to this CD everywhere I go and I get very enthusiastic response. Bonus: Their politics and style of mixing Israeli and Arabic musical traditions and vocals gives us hope for a better world.
Customer Review: No complaints
CD was in perfect condition. Took a little longer to arrive than I’d expected but this may not be the fault of the vendor. Buy from here…
