Don Quixote

March 31, 2008

Edith Grossman’s definitive English translation of the Spanish masterpiece. Widely regarded as one of the funniest and most tragic books ever written, Don Quixote chronicles the adventures of the self-created knight-errant Don Quixote of La Mancha and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, as they travel through sixteenth-century Spain. You haven’t experienced Don Quixote in English until you’ve read this masterful translation.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.
Customer Review: Don Quixote is my Spanish Bible.
“Time ripens all things. No man is born wise.”

Don Quixote is one of my ten favorite novels, and I confess I read it as my Spanish Bible. Miguel de Cervantes’s novel follows a disconnected series adventures of the self-proclaimed “Don Quixote de la Mancha,” a fifty-year-old country gentleman named Alonso Quixano, who has an obsession for reading books. Eventually, because he has lost so much sleep reading books, he deludes himself into believing he is a knight errant. He puts on an old suit of armor, mounts his skinny horse Rocinante, and then sets out with his dull-witted neighbour, Sancho Panza, “for there were evils to undo, wrongs to right, injustices to correct, abuses to ameliorate, and offenses to rectify” (p. 24). Don Quixote’s muse and courtly love interest is Dulcinea del Toboso (a neighbouring peasant girl, Aldonza Lorenzo), who is totally oblivious of Quixote’s feelings for her. She never actually appears in the novel. Soon we find Quixote attacking windmills, believing they are giants. On his Quixotic quest, he repeatedly becomes the butt of outrageously cruel practical jokes, all because of his self-deception. Even his humble squire Sancho is forced to play along with Quixote’s delusions. Although Quixote’s quest for adventure leads him to complete disillusionment, melancholia, and to the renunciation of chivalry, ultimately (as Harold Bloom suggests in his excellent Introduction) Cervantes’ novel may be read as a lesson in Quixotism (note the capital Q), the act of being caught up in idealism or in the romance of noble deeds, and the pursuit of unreachable goals (fighting with the Windmills of one’s own Head).

Dostoyevsky called Don Quixote “the ultimate and most sublime work of human thinking.” There are many translations of Don Quixote (at least twenty in English), the two most recent by John Rutherford and by Edith Grossman. While I am not qualified to say Grossman’s is the definitive edition of Don Quixote, there are several reasons to read her translation. First, she is an award-winning translator respected for her previous translations of Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, and Nobel laureate, Gabriel García Márquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude;Love in the Time of Cholera). “Fidelity is surely our highest aim,” she has said about the art of translation; “but a translation is not made with tracing paper. It is an act of critical interpretation.” Her translation of Don Quixote has been praised by such writers and as Carlos Fuentes and Harold Bloom, and is quite readable. Second, Grossman’s translation includes an insightful introduction by Bloom, making this a highly-recommended edition, if not a definitive edition of Don Quixote.

Customer Review: Such a Beautiful Book
This is the book to answer to all books. It is the book that makes all other books question their bookness. It is the essence of book.

No, but really.. I feel like Don Quixote was a real turning point in my life as a reader. It changed me from a person who loved books into a Reader, and by Reader I mean a person who reads as an artform, like a painter paints or a musician plays. Can a person read creatively? Can they actively express themselves through the act of reading? Yes. Buy from here…

Hell’s Angel: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club

March 31, 2008

Narrated by the visionary founding member, Hell’s Angel provides a fascinating all-access pass to the secret world of the notorious Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club. Sonny Barger recounts the birth of the original Oakland Hell’s Angels and the four turbulent decades that followed. Hell’s Angel also chronicles the way the HAMC revolutionized the look of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and built what has become a worldwide bike-riding fraternity, a beacon for freedom-seekers the world over.

Dozens of photos, including many from private collections and from noted photographers, provide visual documentation to this extraordinary tale. Never simply a story about motorcycles, colorful characters, and high-speed thrills, Hell’s Angel is the ultimate outlaw’s tale of loyalty and betrayal, subcultures and brotherhood, and the real price of freedom.

Customer Review: Hubby loved it!
Kept him busy until…well he’s still reading it. He keeps it in the “library” so he only reads a few paragraphs at a time. Then he comes out and tells me about what he read. Like I care! Bought to keep him entertained, not me.

TLC: Now & Forever - The Video Hits

March 31, 2008

Customer Review: classic
this is the classic album …. a must-have for all TLC fans! i just love listening to it on the way to work or wherever i need to go!
Customer Review: 3 1/2 stars - Not complete, but I am grateful for its release.
I couldn’t resist buying this in the store yesterday because I just love TLC’s music and charisma. They are also one of the few artists who I think truly mastered the art of the music video. Here’s the list of videos included on this DVD:

01. Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg
02. Baby-Baby-Baby
03. What About Your Friends
04. Creep
05. Red Light Special
06. Waterfalls
07. Diggin’ On You
08. No Scrubs
09. Unpretty
10. Girl Talk

This DVD contains the videos for their biggest hits, but I also would’ve liked to have all of their videos. Maybe even some of the solo ones. I really love all of them, but my favorites are “Waterfalls,” “No Scrubs” and “Unpretty.” “No Scrubs” is futuristic and cool, just like most of Hype Williams’ videos. The video also has Lisa’s rap segment, which definitely should’ve been included on the album. “Waterfalls” is just beautiful. Every time I watch it, it feels like the first time and I’m touched. “Unpretty” has a great story and message that I think everybody needs to hear these days. The 5.1 Surround Sound option is very nice. The quality sound brings the videos to life even more. The photo gallery is pretty lame. There are just four small pictures, one from each album/era. They’re nice, though. The behind-the-scenes footage also isn’t that exciting. It’s a little promo from the Fanmail era mixed with a few pictures and parts of videos.

Overall, like many have said before, this collection is great but incomplete. However, I’m grateful that we finally have a TLC video collection released. TLC continuously made great, compelling and energetic videos. (Note to record labels: wait until the end of an artist’s career to release a video collection and include all of them!)

Customer Review: The Sign Video Review
I have had this video for a long time and still enjoy it. If you want to see their videos as well as interview clips, I highly recommend it. It is great to actually be able to see their personalities. Linn and her brother have plenty of that. They can also be very comical. If you like Ace of Base, you will love the video. An absolute must for fans.

Customer Review: Poor Sound-Good DVD
Awful sound ruins a very good DVD.
Customer Review: Lena. Julia. — You Rock!!
This Dvd is a must for all the fans that respect themselves. I viewed and reviewed this Dvd a lot of times. It shows Lena and Julia Behind the scenes;; their clips [all the things she said(english and russian version); not gonna get us(english and russian version); 30 minutes and how soon is now];; a live performance for MTv and a rehearsal.

What I liked the most with the Dvd was the clips “all the things she said” and “not gonna get us” in the russian version. In fact the clip “all the things said” are only edited clips taken form the russian version clip and lip matched to the english version. Same for “not gonna get”.

I freaked when I saw the 2 girls kissing in the rain. It is S-O exciting!! (From my point of view, of course).

To crown all, I say that it is a Dvd everyone must see. The girls are so hot. If you appreciate them, you’ll see. You Worth It. Buy from here…

Destiny Fulfilled

March 29, 2008

Some thought it would never happen, but after solo successes and a three-year hiatus the ladies of Destiny’s Child have reunited for the eagerly-anticipated Destiny Fulfilled. The Houston-based trio of Kelly, Michelle and some girl named Beyonce follow up their mega successful Survivor with another album full of infectious dance grooves and melancholy tales of women done wrong. Lead single “Lose My Breath” is their first offering of the former. Backed by a kinetic marching band sample, they sing with an urgency that bolsters the Rodney Jerkins-produced track. Current single “Soldier” is more of the same. Featuring T.I. and Lil’ Wayne, the song allows the trio to sing the praises of the kind of men they like.

Despite this one-two uptempo punch, DC does do ballads. They go old-school on the moving “If.” Michelle, who has several impressive solos throughout, and Beyonce trade lines about finding and holding on to love. However, on “Bad Habit” the trio goes for the paint-by-numbers woman finding her inner-strength theme. Other highlights include the 9th Wonder and Beyonce-produced “Girl” and the midtempo gem “Free.” –Rashaun Hall
Customer Review: My favorite Destiny’s Child Album
I must confess, I was so mad at Destiny’s Child when I first purchased the album because I wanted more tracks. I have since learned to appreciate the quality of work these girls put out on this album. Their harmonies are perfect and each one has equal time on each song. They all participated in the songwriting and they are even credited as producers. The topics show a lot of growth when you compare it to Survivor. These girls are straight up women on this album, so the whole album talks about being in and out of love. My absolute faves are: Bad Habit, which was written by Solange and Kelly, Girl, Cater To You, and Love. I would have to say that Kelly shows the most growth. Her voice is purely angelic and one thing I have noticed is that Beyonce produces their vocals, and in my opinion, Kelly sounds her best when produced by Beyonce. Please get this album. That’s all I have to say.
Customer Review: Beyonce contradicts herself and Destiny’s Child is lame
Ok… Beyonce sings about being a very independent woman and being a Survivor but she’s singing about have a ghetto thug in Soldier to make her complete and that she will slave over a man in Cater 2 You? She lacks substance in her music and she’s contradicts herself. There’s a better word for this a Hypocrite. First of all, the Destiny’s Child girls are from a upper middle class neighborhood in Texas but they’re dressing up as ghetto girls in the Soldier video? And they’re singing about that they want a ghetto thug as a boyfriend. No girl wants a ghetto dude as a boyfriend. They mays sell more albums than most girls groups but TLC, the Supremes, and En Vogue and even latin freestyle girl groups from the 1980’s like the Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, Seduction, Expose have more substance in their music and lyrics. March 29, 2008

Completely revised guide to the extraordinary Colorado Trail that stretches 468 miles from Denver to Durango • The only guide available for thru-hikers, day hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, XC skiers, and equestrians. • 90 color pictures, 28 segment maps, elevation profiles, integrated GPS waypoints, town maps and Mountain bike detours of Wilderness Areas • 35,000 copies sold The Colorado Trail (CT) is the premier scenic long trail in North America. It winds its way through endless fields of wildflowers to windy mountain passes, from wild mountain rivers and streams to quiet trails through old growth forests. The CT crosses eight mountain ranges, seven National Forests, six Wilderness Areas and five river systems. Starting near Denver at 5500 feet and ending near Durango at 7000 feet, the CT gains and loses almost 76,000 feet in elevation over 468 miles.

This seventh edition of the official CT guide has all the information a thru-hiker needs to plan and complete his or her trek. New to this edition are complete rewrites of the 28-segment trail descriptions and the addition of integrated GPS waypoints.

Each segment has distance, elevation gain, an overview of the segment; a list of trailhead and access points; maps needed; a list of supply points; services and accommodations; detailed trail description; a map, and an elevation gain and loss chart. Additional town maps and mountain bike detour maps (around Wilderness Areas) have been added where applicable.

An extensive introduction includes information on planning, supplying, safety, cycling, regulations, and backcountry ethics—plus chapters on Colorado Trail heritage, natural history, and geology. At the back of the book you will find a graphic summary of the trail, equipment list, ranger districts with contact information, bibliography, and index.
Customer Review: Incomplete and heavy
This is the first book that I have read from back to front. I hiked the CT from Durango to Denver in 32 days from mid-August to Mid-September 2005 and this book was my main guide. I wanted to give this book 2 stars only, but because it actually brought me all the way, I decided on 3. What is the reason for this harsh judgement?

The reason is not, that I had to read it backwards! - Some people on the trail found it confusing to read it the wrong way, but I found the description of the trail adequate in most places. I got lost a few times when missing a junction, but this happened maybe once a week and is part of the game. In general the trail is extremely well marked. - No, I find the data in this book incomplete. Everything and more (except for scetches of trail towns) you will find in the tiny and cheap Trailside Databook from the same publisher. My my main complaints are, that this book
* has very little concrete information about water sources (!) and campsites.
* poor maps. The maps included are US Forest Service maps that show no elevation data (unlike USSGS topo maps). This makes it near impossible to figure out any geographic features. This also means you probably want to buy additional maps. This could easily cost you 100 bucks! Other guide books (PCT) include usable maps.
* has very coarse elevation profiles. Usually only 4 to 6 data points are given for each of the 28 segments. You might actually be walking uphill, while the elevation profile points down! In a time of computer generated elevation profiles this is inexcusable. (Even the displays at segment trailheads show _much_ better profiles.)
* gives elevation “gain” for each segment but no “loss” information. This is important if you have a bad hip or hike the “wrong” direction where “down” and “up” switch places.

The book is printed on very glossy, heavy paper. This means beautiful pictures are included. But it also means that most hiker tear out pages as they go to save weight. The paper does not burn well and can’t be used as a fire starter at all.

On the positive side the book tries to teach you a little bit about the history of each of the 28 segments (usually one page). As I went on I really enjoyed reading them and got a feeling for the history (mostly mining and railroads).

The book is adequate as a guide. My recommendation for those planing a thru-hike: get the trailside data book from the same publisher (better get 2 copies, as I lost mine early and it was impossible to replace on the trail) and a set of good topo maps. You might get away without maps, as the trail is very well marked, but having them provides an additional layer of safety and a lot of interesting information.
Customer Review: Now with GPS waypoints/coordinates
